What is a Menstrual period?

Menstrual cramps are light or severe pain experienced by women before or during the menstrual period in the lower abdomen or pelvic areas. These cramps may sometime collapse your daily routine few days every month. This is somewhat similar to the pain which is experienced by pregnant women in labor with prostaglandin medication.

Symptoms of Menstrual Cramps 

Some women experience nausea, vomiting, dizziness.
Headaches, Irritability, Leg pain are some of the symptoms.
In rare cases some even faint during menstrual period.
This menstrual cramps are sometimes accompanied by loss of appetite

Causes for Menstrual cramps

Contraction of uterus muscle due to some chemical reaction causes menstrual cramps.
Intensity of pain varies with women’s prostaglandin levels.
Pre menstrual syndrome (PMS) is also one for the reason for the menstrual cramps.
Overweight or Obesity can also be the reason for menstrual cramps.
Ovarian cyst may also increase the intensity of menstrual cramps.
Tumors or any extra growth in uterus may also lead to severe menstrual cramps.

Remedies for Menstrual cramps

Hot bath or heating pad can be applied on the abdominal area to reduce the cramps.
Regular exercise, yoga can also help in menstrual cramps.
Drink plenty of water to avoid cramps due to dehydration.
Over the counter medications like Ibuprofen like Advil can lower the cramps.
Take some warm drink like Herbal Tea to relax your muscles by increasing the blood flow.
Herbal spa or abdominal massage may also relieve the pain.
Ginger (Boil the ginger in water and drink the extract) and parsley (extract) are considered to be effective home remedy to reduce the menstrual cramps.
Vitamin supplements, diet that is high in magnesium (nuts) can be taken.
Diet rich is fiber (whole grains), vegetable, fruits and fish which are high in Omega-3 fatty acids act as an anti-inflammatory and reduces the cramps.
