Sciatica Pain — The Symptoms, Causes, And Treatment

Sciatica is a relatively common form of low back pain and leg pain; it is a set of symptoms for what is irritating the root of the nerve formed at the lower part of the spinal cord, causing the pain. The pain starts at the buttocks and goes down the back of the leg.

Sciatica Pain Causes

Sciatica pain is caused when the sciatic nerve is injured due to any reason which can include pelvis bone fracture or due to accidents in which thigh and buttocks are involved. Sciatic nerve can also be injured if a person stays either lying or sitting for long periods without moving.

The injury can also happen due to tumor or bleeding in the pelvis area. Therefore the sciatic pain will happen depending on the place where the injury has taken place. From the injured point the pain may beam towards the foot or toes. Sciatica injury can cause:

Incessant pain on one side of the back will not let you stand up
There will be burning sensation down the leg
There will be weakness due to which it will be difficult to move the leg
There will be intense pain at the back while trying to sit
People gets frightened when they get sciatica pain, which is due to the fact that most of them do not understand what is actually wrong with them. Some begin to feel that the incident might be crippling; this fear factor adds to their suffering. What they are unaware of is that sciatic nerve pain can be effectively treated. When such pain attacks, it is advised not to use your feet because using your feet will make the nerves more sensitive. Soaking in warm water can relieve the pain somewhat; however heating should be limited to short spells. Some physicians even advice ice packs to be applied directly on the affected area for around twenty minutes. This will help reduce swelling of the area.

As regards treatment of sciatica pain medicines are prescribed but these pain killers can be addictive. Surgery is another option, but it has been found that surgery is not a surefire way of curing sciatica pain. On the other hand it has been found that surgery can cause more harm than good to the patient. Open back surgery has been used effectively to correct sciatica but there might be devastating side effect in this type of sciatica treatment.
