Tinea Corporis or Ringworm

Tinea Corporis –

Ringworm, or medically called as tinea corporis or tinea corporis, is not even a worm. Instead, it is a fungus. Tinea corporis is actually an infection of the body or face that caused by a fungus. It usually happens in tropical treatment and affects equally between men and women from all ages.

Tinea corporis

Tinea corporis is an infection of dermatophyte, which is a medical term for a group of related fungi that infect and live on dead the top-most layer of epidermis called keratin. Tinea corporis itself is caused by three kinds of fungi: Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum canis, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes.

Tinea corporis appears as a lesion that looks flat and scaly spotty at first. Then it develops into a larger size creating a red, raised, and scaly border. Central area of it is more normal appearing with fine scaling. Infection of ringworm that is treated with steroids usually has vesicles or pustules in the border or the center. Tingea corpus can grow in the leg, hand, or finger.

The existence of tinea corporis can only be known by diagnosing it clinically. Doctor sees it by seeing the appearance of the classic rash. But somehow some ringworm can show themselves in the same way other skin condition may appear, like granuloma annulare or tinea versicolor. The most accurate way to detect tinea corpus is using KOH test.

Tinea corporis treatment

Since the appearance of tinea corporis responds very well to the tropical treatment. Antifungal, especially the kind of tropical one, is applied to the lesion twice a day for three weeks. The disease will be relieved within 2 weeks but therapy should be continued. Some of popular antifungals are miconazole, clotrimazole, terbinafine, and ketoconazole.

Instead of tropical, you can do your own oral treatment. Oral antifungal medications can be used once a day in 7 days. Some recommended oral antifungal medications for tinea corporis are terbinafrine and itraconazole.

Preventing tinea corporis involves keeping skin always dry and avoiding contacts. First of all, try to wash your hands after handling animals or soil. Then try to avoid touching characteristic lesions on other people. Wear loose-fitting clothing and practice good hygiene especially in sport activities since it may have fungi that can cause tinea corporis .
