Nausea

Nausea is a feeling of discomfort accompanied with dizziness, sweating and a vomiting tendency. Nausea however can have either physiological or psychological basis to happen. Various reasons may manifest into nauseous tendencies. Motion sickness, gastrointestinal problems, certain conditions of pain or food intolerance, effects of medicines, problems in brain due to head injury or trauma, pregnancy etc may result in nausea.

Nausea causes you to feel continuous discomfort and along with a tendency to vomit which may or may not result in vomiting. Many physical or mental conditions may account for nausea. Some mentions of such conditions are that of disequilibrium due to vertigo or motion sickness, depression, stress, diabetes, cancer, alcoholism, heart attack, bowel syndrome, chemotherapy, first trimester of pregnancy and so on.   Antiemetics which include Metoclopramide and Ondansetron are medications that help to relieve feelings of nausea.

The most important thing about nausea is that it isn’t a disease by itself but the manifestation of some prevailing condition of the mind or the body. Sometimes nausea experienced due to temporary conditions like traveling in a vehicle gets relieved by itself within a short while when that condition gets over or is avoided. However, repeated and continuous experiences of nausea may indicate that you must consider medical check up to ascertain the root cause of the same.

Nausea that is transitory or short lived happens to most of us some time or the other and there isn’t anything to worry about it. But having to put up with nausea persistently becomes quite distressing and you are rendered incapable to perform your daily activities as you keep feeling disoriented and sick.

Home remedies to abate nausea

If you frequently face nausea then keep a bottle of non-carbonated drink ready. Take half cup of the drink which contains carbohydrates that assist in relieving nausea caused due to stomach related problems. Consuming ginger root also relieves nausea due to stomach or gastrointestinal problems. You may also cut a little piece of ginger and chew it along with some salt. Peppermint and herbal tea helps clearing the stomach thus relieving nausea feelings caused due to bloated stomach.

Pregnant ladies facing morning sickness and nausea can take a drink of water containing a tbsp of apple cider vinegar and a tbsp of honey mixed together at bedtime. Wheat germ mixed with milk is also an effective remedy for combating nausea during pregnancy. Consuming cumin seeds and rice water can help relieve nausea symptoms.

It is essential for you to understand that prolonged nausea should be consulted with the doctor to find the exact reason. Following a healthy lifestyle, taking balanced diet containing fiber rich foods, avoiding bad habits like alcoholism and also spicy and junk foods, doing regular exercise and taking proper rest and sleep can definitely ensure keeping nausea at bay.
