Wisdom Teeth Issues

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars in human. It usually appears in late teens or early twenties. They are valuable asset to the mouth when healthy and properly aligned. But when misaligned they can position themselves horizontally, and affect other teeth, jawbone and nerves as they develop. Teeth that remain partially or completely entrapped within the soft tissue and /or the jawbone are termed “impacted”. They are often extracted when this occurs. Around ninety percent of the population develops wisdom teeth.

Symptoms of Wisdom teeth:

Wisdom teeth that are in need of extraction do not show any major symptoms. However they show signs that they are not growing properly. The following are some of its symptoms.

Pain or jaw stiffness near the impacted tooth.
Pain and irritation from the tooth which is in an awkward angle.
An infected swelling in the flap of gum tissue located in the back of the mouth.
Crowding of other teeth, tooth decay or gum disease.
Feeling of discomfort when teeth rub against the cheek, top or bottom of the mouth.
Causes of Wisdom tooth pain:

The following are the major reasons for the impacted wisdom teeth.

As they are developing as third molars, they don’t have enough room to grow normally. So they become partially or fully impacted.
They grow at an angle towards the second molar tooth or back of the mouth.
Sometimes they might grow perpendicular to the other teeth, as if it is “lying down” within the jawbone.
Occasionally they grow straight up or down like other teeth but stay trapped within the jawbone.

Garlic has antibacterial properties. Crushing and placing the small clove of peeled garlic between teeth and gum line can help reduce the pain of wisdom teeth.
Clove oil also has antiseptic properties to soothe the pain. Boil 4-6 cloves with a 2-inch piece of bark from the margosa tree in a cup of water and smear this mixture on the affected area for immediate relief from the pain.
Vitamin C prevents tooth decay and infections, and also soothes tooth ache. Lime acts as an excellent home remedy for tooth pain. Applying warm solution of lemon juice and asafetida is also effective.
Prevention of Wisdom tooth pain:

Wisdom tooth pain can be prevented in following ways.

Rinse the tooth with warm salt water which will relieve lot of pain.
Applying oil of cloves is also effective.
