Itchy Eyes

Eyes, probably the most important part of the human body, are very sensitive, delicate, moist and prone to airborne infections.  It is very common for a person to have itchy eyes and then rubbing them to get temporary relief from the itching. However, while rubbing them gives temporary relief, it also provokes the allergens to enter the eyes thereby making the itchiness worse and causing redness.

There are several factors that cause itchy eyes.  Some of them are:

Allergens: These include cleaning products, eye makeup accessories, animal dander, certain foods, lens & lens solution etc. These allergens create a temporary discomfort to the eyes, thereby causing itchiness and redness in the eyes.
Conjunctivitis or Pink eye: These are caused by viral or bacterial infection and considered highly contagious.
Dry eyes:  These are caused by improper functioning of the tear glands present in the eyes.
Common Cold: These often affect the eyes due to coughing and sneezing.
Itchy eyes can be easily spotted, with the most common symptom being the redness of the eyes.  The redness causes an irritating and burning sensation, and creates a tendency to rub the eyes more often resulting in a watery discharge from the eyes.

There are few home remedies to treat the itchy eyes.

The redness is generally temporary and vanishes in a couple of days if it is due to any allergens, dryness or common cold. To hasten this, it is best to avoid rubbing the eyes and get a good 8-hour long sleep.
Avoiding frequent contact with television or laptops or computers also helps immensely.
If the itchiness and redness persist, another remedy is to use a cold compresses. . These cold compresses are available in the shops or can be made at home. They can be placed on the eyes for 2-3 times a day for about half-hour or until the discomfort reduces. Cold compress can be made very easily at home using ice wrapped with a clean towel, hand-kerchief or wipes.
There are other natural remedies for itchy eyes that are as effective.  A common way is to use a pair of sliced and chilled cucumbers or potatoes for a minimum period of 30 – 40 minutes on the eyes. By nature, cucumbers and potatoes have anti-irritant properties in them that reduce swelling, puffiness and irritation, while keeping the eyes cool.
Rose water can also be applied on the eyes because they have a cooling and soothing effect on the eyes. A few drops of rose water on a cotton swab, held over the eye for a few minutes is very effective.
Application of Aloe Vera cream or a mixture of Aloe Vera cream with a small amount of honey and elderberry blossom tea has also been found to get rid of eye related ailments.
While some of the above are the common and natural ways to treat itchy eyes at home, if the redness and itchiness still persist after trying the some of them for 2 to 3 days, then it could be due to viral or bacterial infection (pink eye) and it is advisable to see a doctor.
