Over-the-counter medicines can be either oral or topical. Here are the explanation:

Oral Over-the-counter Medicine

Generally Terbinafine (Lamisil), Itraconaole (Sporanox) or Ketoconazole (Nizoral) are prescribed. These are to be taken along with the topical medication.  These are in the form of pill, tablet or capsule and are strong medicines and there are chances of your stomach getting upset, therefore it is advised to take these medicines with an antacid.

Topical Over-the-counter Medicine

If the intensity of infection is mild, then over-the-counter creams or ointment of antifungal type will be able to control the infection. On the other hand if the infection is severe and has affected a large area then over-the-counter ointments will not be adequate. In such cases topical medicines like Clotrimazole (LotriminAF, Mycelex), Miconazole (Micatin) and Tolnaftate (Tinactin) should be used.

Before applying these high strength creams you need to wash the affected area, thereafter apply a thin layer of the cream. This should be done two times a day for two weeks or as required.

Ringworm Treatment Using Medicated Shampoo

If the scalp is affected by ringworm a medicated shampoo should be used as ringworm treatment. These shampoos contain selenium sulfide which destroys the ringworms and stops its spreading to other people. To use the shampoo effectively you should lather the hair and let it stay for five minutes, thereafter wash it off thoroughly.
