Pregnancy Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are caused due to several reasons and both males and females may face problems of stretch marks. Stretch marks often happen due to sudden varying differences in body fat or stretching and contraction of the upper skin layer which results in scars that seem like the skin has been pulled or stitched after being ripped. The dermis often gets torn due to severe stretching, sudden growth splurge as during puberty or sudden contraction after that of a pregnancy. The skin elasticity in such processes often gets challenged thereby forming such marks on the upper skin layer.

Stretch marks are a matter of predisposition as well. Some may develop anyway while some may never develop stretch marks. The marks initially appear as purple or reddish marks and slowly take a lighter hue. These lines are palpable and tender to touch. Stretch marks may form on any part of the body but the most usual areas are those where fat deposits are high like the thighs, breasts, upper and under arms, buttocks, hips and the abdomen especially around the area surrounding the navel.

Stretch marks are not risky towards health but most of us may not like them to appear on our skin as these marks create a kind of scarring and interfere with the smooth appearance of the skin. Stretch marks once formed may take time to fade and in most cases doesn’t go away completely. Therefore, it is best to prevent stretch marks to occur than try to remove them with much more efforts later on.

Stretch marks are found to have higher incidence among women who have become pregnant early, weight gain during pregnancy has crossed 15kgs, has high body mass index and also among teenagers. The skin gets stretched eventually getting torn in the dermal and epidermal layers and this is triggered by the hormone glucocorticoid which thwarts the formation of collagen and elastin fibers by the fibroblasts that are responsible for keeping the skin firm. A lot of factors either accelerate or retard the process of stretch marks to happen and these are hormonal changes, genetics, lifestyle, diet and also regularity of exercises.
