Most bug bites are not harmful, though they bring momentary alarm, temporary discomfort and pain. Fire ant, wasp, hornet and bee bites hurt and cause pain. Mosquito, mite and flea bites usually itch. Spider and scorpion bites produce painful reactions and some are rarely fatal. Some people have severe reactions to bites and stings. Babies and children may be more affected than adults.

Symptoms of bug bite:

Bug bite response is usually variable and depends on variety of factors.

Most bug bites result in pain, itching, redness and swelling in the injured area. If the area is scratched the skin may be broken or become infected.
If the person is allergic to the bite, he may experience a severe reaction. This may cause hives, wheezing, un-consciousness, shortness of breath, light headedness and even death within 30 minutes. This allergic reaction is known as anaphylaxis.
A bite on the tongue cause airway obstruction and may result in throat swelling and death.
Bites from large a hornet or a bee can cause muscle breakdown and kidney failure in rare cases.

Home Remedies for bug bite:

The treatment for bug bite depends on the type of reaction.

Application of ice is adequate treatment for redness and pain at the site of the bite.
Contaminated particles which may be left behind by some insects in the bitten area should be cleaned with soap and water.
Scratching should be avoided because this may cause the skin to break down and an infection to form.
Itching and redness at the site of the bite can be treated with over-the-counter antihistamine or calamine lotion
If it is a bee bite and the stinger is still in the skin, remove the stinger as quickly as possible.
If the bug bites on the arm or leg, lower the limb immediately to slow down the spread of the venom.  After some time, if swelling occurs, elevate the limb to reduce swelling.
After the first 6 hours, if swelling is still present, try applying warmth to the site for comfort.
